A real workout

Nat Newman

Our second session with Iwan was a lot tougher than our first. He really decided to put us through our paces and we all felt it after the session. It was a hard session to get through but Iwan said he was really pleased with all of us and that we done really well to perform the way we did.

Iwan taught us more about how important it is to warm up and the way in which we should warm up in this session, and we were all shocked in how much effort it really takes to get our bodies ready to perform. With the new information Iwan has given us it will help us to prevent any future injuries to our bodies and hopefully keep as many of us fit and injury free as possible.

Although I can really feel the pain after our second session it is still very exciting to be training for such a great event and is extremely exciting to be coached by Iwan Thomas who is such a great athlete and role model in himself.

This was our first session we had ever done on both an athletics track and with the equipment we had been supplied with. The equipment and clothing we were given at beginning of the session was a massive surprise and shocked us all. We loved the gear and it really made us feel more switched on and helped us to focus on how big of an opportunity this really is.

For our first session Iwan was really honest with us and told all of us exactly what he expected of us. We completed many different timed races within the session and this gave Iwan a better chance to have a closer look at the team he picked. I think I can speak for all 6 of us when I say this is going to be extremely hard and going to test all of our body’s to their max.

After only one session it is hard to know exactly what Iwan is like as a coach, however he seems to be a very good motivator and looks just as excited as us about the whole thing. It is a different aspect and view into running for Iwan as he has never done any real coaching before. Now he has to turn all 6 of us into proper athletes and he has promised to work us really hard, and personally I’m really looking forward to the challenge.

Today at training we warmed up by jogging around the track twice, next we did some static stretches for about 10 minutes. Then, for another 10 minutes, we did heel flicks and knees up.

After that we did some striding practice followed by learning how to keep our head down when running and then gradually bring it up in the space of 15 metres. Then Iwan told us to put our running shoes on, spikes, and we done some more stride practice for about 5 minutes.

After that we practiced our strides round the bends, after we had finished that we did four 200 metres sprints with a 6 minute rest inbetween each race. After these races we did a 100 metre race so that Iwan could analyse how much stamina we had and how much pace we still had left in us.

Then we finished up by warming down, we first removed our running shoes and then we slowly jogged around the track in our trainers to decrease the lactic acid in our muscles. I was tired at the end of today’s session but I felt like I had made progress.
